Main research activities are concentrated into the novel approaches in studying environmental governance in particular within experimental platform Virtual commons, established by the Center for the Study of Institutional Diversity (CSID), Arizona State University. CETIP participated on field experiments with common pool resources (2009-2011) under the supervision of Dr. Marco Janssen, who was also hosted by CETIP at a research visit in September –October 2011

Under the partnership with the Earth System Governance, CETIP contributed to global governance research with recently completed Cost Action Transformation of Global Environmental Governance focusing on cross scale governance mechanisms in particular regional inter-linkages. In 2011 CETIP has organized international workshop: The role of New Approaches in Studying Sustainable governance: Experimental Research and Modeling of Governance Processes.

Frontiers research interests are in analysing and predicting individual and group behaviour in decision making under the complexity and uncertainty of external disturbances. Complexity of present world, in particular diversity of interest, multiple decision actors and spatial dynamics of economic and natural processes have dramatically increased probability of unexpected events and vulnerability of traditional socio-ecological systems. Adaptation to those disturbances requires new governance and policy approaches. Application of multiple methods approach to study complexity of governance intend to increase validity of research results
Diffusion of eco innovation to global arena, transition to low carbon societies, polycentric urban governance are key challenges. Research questions and challenges will be subject to cooperation uder the CENTRE of STRATEGIC ANALYSES recently established by CE EU SPECTRA, Slovak University of Technology and Slovak Academic of Sciences

Concept of multiple method approach (originally by Pottete, Janssen, Ostrom, 2010) has been developed by CETIP as the training course to support intergenerational continuity and increase research and collaborative capacity of doctoral and post doctoral interdisciplinary researchers. To date the course has been incorporated into the regular PhD program at Slovak University of Technology and Comenius University Bratislava. In October 2012 it become part of training series of the European Society for Ecological Economics, which is follow up program to successful series of THEMES project

Among products of academic cooperation Virtual laboratory of experimental social sciences (VEEL) has established under the SPECTRA+ and collaboration with Virtual Scientific Laboratories (VSL) Laboratory mission is to increase innovative potential of interdisciplinary natural-social science research and the quality of graduate and postgraduate education in the Slovak Republic. The key purpose of VEEL lab is to create a platform for research and teaching in social science within the Slovak academic community. Existence of local experimental economic laboratory creates opportunity to expand region specific research projects, attract attention of young scholars to expand their carrier in their home country. VEEL is partner lab to Ostrom lab at Arizona State University cooperating within the network of Virtual commons

CETIP organize and facilitate research dialogue at national and international level. Research visits, training schools, thematic workshops and conference sessions are key components:

Visit of Dr. Marco Janssen, director of partner Centre to Study Institutional Diversity (CSID) at Arizona State University was undertaken in September and October 2011

International workshop: The role of New Approaches in Studying Sustainable governance: Experimental Research and Modeling of Governance Processes. Has been undertaken as part of Cost project on TGEG in October 2011

Prof. Dan Bromley and Jouni Paavola undertaken research visit in October 2012

We plan to continue in inviting important international researchers for short-term and long-term research visits and exchange visit of our researchers.

Series of discussion sessions organized jointly by CETIP, CSID and other partners has been undertaken within numerous international scientific conferences since 2009

Experimental methods in governance of the commons in social and natural science has been expanded as topic of scientific and popularization projects during the established activities such as “The Researchers‘ Night”.
Web based version of Forestry game was tested with students from Primary School and Gymnasium of Highly Intelligent Kids form Bratislava, Slovakia. The game was adopted for educational purposes. The aim of this experiment is to develop children’s ability to make decisions on natural resources, collectively and responsibly
